Latex Mattress Firmness Guide
Firmness labels are useful, but they are not perfectly standardized across mattress brands. The same “Medium-Firm” label can feel different depending on latex thickness and the support core.
What changes perceived firmness?
- Sleep position
- Body weight
- Latex ILD and layer thickness
- Coil or latex support layers
- Quilting and surface materials
Use ILD carefully
Indentation Load Deflection describes the force required to compress a foam sample under specified test conditions. It can help compare latex layers, but it does not fully predict how an entire mattress will feel.
Practical approach
Start with your position and weight, choose the firmness direction that makes sense, then evaluate the brand's trial terms in case your real-world feel differs from the label.
